Apple is the only manufacturer so far which has restrained from launching its dual sim iPhones. The patents are filed by Apple in China and USA. As the iPhone sales of Apple are witnessing a slowdown in the Western and European markets, Apple is now going full throttle in Developing markets like China and India by offering lucrative deals on iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and the older iPhone 6s models. In these markets dual sim phones are hugely popular due to customers using different sim cards for personal and business usage. Similar trends are being witnessed in such markets due to affordability of carriers in India based on calling and data plans.

Apple which has so far shied away from launching a dual sim iPhone due to its contractual sales of iPhones in Western markets, may launch exclusive iPhone models for the developing markets like India and China. Apple has filed patent documents with China State Intellectual Property Office, which includes a dual-Sim card functionality. This patent will enable Apple’s iPhone to store two numbers in two sim card slots. The company has submitted the application in March 2016 and it was published in September 2016.

Back in the United States Apple was awarded a patent for its dual-sim functionality capable iPhones during the last week. The United States patent reads as, “Some mobile devices have the capability of using multiple SIMs. Allowing users to maintain different wireless services, such as for business and personal use.”

However its not yet clear whether the Apple will incorporate this feature in the upcoming 10th anniversary Apple iPhone 8 or not. The iPhone 8 is going to be a big turnaround device for the company, being the anniversary iPhone, its expected to undergo major design revamp. iPhone being the mainstay of revenue generation for Apple are showing signs of slowdown in sales due to same form factor being carried on from iPhone 6, iPhone 6s to iPhone 7. The iPhone 8 is expected to change fortunes of company in western markets by bringing in new form factor having OLED Display technology and full Glass form factor. Eyeing a bigger chunk of sales, Apple may also launch iPhone 8 with dual-Sim capability to woo buyers and to compete the likes of Samsung Galaxy devices.
